The Amsterdam Centre for Migration and Refugee Law (ACMRL) will host an international conference titled ‘Making Rights Reality: The Human Rights of Undocumented Migrant Workers’ from 17 to 19 June 2024.

The first goal of this conference is to focus attention on existing binding human rights instruments, such as the International Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of their Families (ICRMW), and ILO C-189 Decent Work for Domestic Workers, particularly in light of their non-ratification in global north countries, such as the Netherlands. In preparation for the conference, the ACMRL will produce a knowledge clip with students and the Committee on Migrant Workers to increase awareness of the ICRMW.

While primarily an academic conference, a second goal of the conference is to bring together different partners in the effective protection of migrant rights, main participants also include: the Committee on Migrant Workers; the UN Network on Migration; and civil society, including migrant organizers. Further, this conference aims to bring together scholars from the global south and global north. The the start of the conference will be an evening public event at Pakhuis de Zwijger in Amsterdam, a public forum that regularly hosts political dialogues. In this event, we will engage in roundtable discussions around particular issues regarding the theme of the conference. Activists, undocumented workers, academics, international organizations, and others are invited to share experiences and perspectives around selected themes. The goal of this event is to begin the discussions of the conference outside of the university, in the community, and to get to know each other.
